He Does Not Leave Us in the Dark (Homily)

There are times when our faith grows thin. Not gone, but thin. The prayers that once came easily now feel like words spoken into an empty room. The certainty we used to lean on has gone quiet. So ... we do what God's people have always done: we reach out in the dark of night and cry out, "Lord, show me the path. Show me the way of salvation."

If that is where you are today, take heart. That cry is not a sign that your faith has failed. It is a sign that your faith is alive and still reaching. In today's Gospel ...

He does not scold us for our weakness or wait for us to pull ourselves together first. He simply tells us the truth:

He does not leave us when our prayer feels dry ... He does not leave us when we have wandered off and are ashamed to come back ... He does not leave us in the hospital room, the empty house, the sleepless night ... and He does not leave us without a plan.

So... that restlessness you feel ... the sense that you are failing ... that you were made for something more ... is not a defect. It is a sign! It is God calling you back toward Himself!

So, ask Him:

... what His will is for you. Not what you wish it were. What it is. Then be still long enough to hear the answer.

... for protection. For your family, for your faith, for the parts of your heart most likely to wander.

... to show you the path. For the one that ends with you in His presence, in eternity, where the dark night is finally over.

He is not waiting to be convinced. He is waiting to be asked.
