- Reflecting on the Holy Spirit
St. Basil the Great, You stood in a time of confusion, When the Spirit's glory was questioned, His Divinity doubted. Careful, wise, and rooted in prayer, You gave the Church words to hold onto. You taught that the Holy Spirit is Not a creature, Not a servant, Not a gift somehow separate from the Trinity. You demonstrated that the Spirit is Equal to the Father and the Son. Worthy of the same honor Worthy of the same worship Worthy of the same love. In this way, Today and every day, I confess that You, O Holy Spirit, are God. You hovered over the waters. You spoke through the prophets. You descended on the apostles. And now You dwell in me, Giving me life and Calling me to the fullness of God. I worship You. Not as an afterthought, Not as an appendix to the Trinity, but as the One who sanctifies, Who perfects, Who makes the unknowable God known in my heart. Through the intercession of St. Basil the Great, Most Holy Spirit, save me from myself, and sanctify me. Ask: If you have a question or a prayer request, please reach out here . - A Prayer on Acquiring the Holy Spirit
St. Seraphim, You stood in the winter forest with Motovilov, and The light of the Spirit shone from your face like the sun. You spoke so simply: The whole aim of life is to acquire the Holy Spirit. Not knowledge about Him, Not rituals performed correctly, but Him The living God, dwelling within. Sadly, I wonder How often I have mistaken the means for the end? I have prayed as though prayer itself were the goal. I have fasted and felt virtuous. I have done good works and counted them. But you remind me that these are only paths, and a path means nothing if it does not lead somewhere. The Holy Spirit gives life ... Guides faith ... and Loves and loves and loves. Warmth in the heart. Peace that the world cannot give. Joy without cause. A stillness that is not empty but full, Full of presence, full of light. I have tasted this, perhaps, in fleeting moments. A liturgy where time seemed to stop. A prayer that prayed itself. A sudden tenderness toward someone I had resented. Were these glimpses of what you knew so fully? Most Holy Spirit, I do not seek experiences of you, I seek You . Come and make Your home in me. Let my poor heart become, By Your mercy, what Seraphim's face became in that snowy clearing, A place where heaven is visible. Through the intercession of St. Seraphim of Sarov, Most Holy Spirit, save me from myself, and sanctify me. Ask: If you have a question or a prayer request, please reach out here . - Our Seasons of Waiting
When the apostles witnessed Your death, They scattered in fear, with their hopes shattered. For days they huddled behind locked doors, Paralyzed by grief and confusion. So too we often find ourselves in such dark rooms— Suffering, uncertain, waiting for a Deliverance we cannot imagine. Yet You did not abandon them. You appeared, breathed peace upon them, and at Pentecost sent Your Holy Spirit to Transfigure these trembling disciples into bold witnesses. Teach us patience in our seasons of waiting. Remind us that after every crucifixion comes resurrection, and In every locked room, comes the rushing wind of Your Spirit. Love and Prayers for the New Year! - Holy Spirit Mondays: Holiness is Surrender
Each week I send a short reflection to help you deepen your relationship with the Holy Spirit. If you have a question or a prayer request, please reach out here . Read: (This is a short reflection I created recently) You are the Lord, the Giver of Life—not a distant force, but the living breath of God who dwells within me. How strange and wondrous that the same Spirit who moved over the waters at creation, who spoke through prophets, who descended as fire at Pentecost, now rests as the uncreated silence in this fragile heart. I confess I forget You. I go about my days as though I were alone, as though transformation were my own project, my own striving. But You are patient. You wait. You work in silence, in the slow turning of seasons within me—purifying what is disordered, illuminating what is dark, drawing me toward a wholeness I cannot manufacture. When I call upon Your Presence over the bread and wine, I am reminded that the ordinary can become a vessel for the holy. If wheat and grapes can bear Your presence, maybe I can too. Perhaps that is the mystery—that You do not disdain this clay but choose to dwell in it. The saints knew this. Seraphim spoke of acquiring You as the whole aim of life. Not ideas about You, not feelings, but You —the living flame, the gentle warmth, the presence that makes all other pursuits seem pale. Come, Holy Spirit. Not because I have prepared a worthy place, but because You are merciful. Teach me to pray. Teach me to be still. Teach me that holiness is not achievement but surrender—a slow yes, repeated daily, to the One who already dwells within. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen. Ponder: It's the end of 2025. Take time to examine your spiritual life. Are you more truthfully aware of God, yourself, and others? Are you more deeply filled with love and forgiveness? Are you more clearly aware of your calling as you begin 2026? In the end, have you grown in your relationship with the Holy Spirit? Pray: "Most Holy Spirit, save me from myself and sanctify me." - Journey of the Magi
"A cold coming we had of it, Just the worst time of the year For a journey, and such a long journey: The ways deep and the weather sharp, The very dead of winter.’ And the camels galled, sore-footed, refractory, Lying down in the melting snow. There were times we regretted The summer palaces on slopes, the terraces, And the silken girls bringing sherbet. Then the camel men cursing and grumbling And running away, and wanting their liquor and women, And the night-fires going out, and the lack of shelters, And the cities hostile and the towns unfriendly And the villages dirty and charging high prices: A hard time we had of it. At the end we preferred to travel all night, Sleeping in snatches, With the voices singing in our ears, saying That this was all folly. "Then at dawn we came down to a temperate valley, Wet, below the snow line, smelling of vegetation; With a running stream and a water-mill beating the darkness, And three trees on the low sky, And an old white horse galloped away in the meadow. Then we came to a tavern with vine-leaves over the lintel, Six hands at an open door dicing for pieces of silver, And feet kicking the empty wine-skins, But there was no information, and so we continued And arrived at evening, not a moment too soon Finding the place; it was (you may say) satisfactory. "All this was a long time ago, I remember, And I would do it again, but set down This set down This: were we led all that way for Birth or Death? There was a Birth, certainly, We had evidence and no doubt. I had seen birth and death, But had thought they were different; this Birth was Hard and bitter agony for us, like Death, our death. We returned to our places, these Kingdoms, But no longer at ease here, in the old dispensation, With an alien people clutching their gods. I should be glad of another death." The above is a poem by T. S. Eliot (1888-1965), which he wrote in 1927. If you have a question or a prayer request, please reach out here . - Holy Spirit Mondays: Saying 'Yes'
Each week I send a short reflection to help you deepen your relationship with the Holy Spirit. If you have a question or a prayer request, please reach out here . Read: “And the angel said to her, 'The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God'" (Luke 1:35). Ponder: The actual fact of an Archangel visiting a person is, in and of itself, worthy of great study and deep meditation. But the extraordinarily personal and private (yet ultimately public and history-changing) visitation of Gabriel to Mary is something to behold, rather than truly grasped. Still, it provides to us a view into the interior life or, more specifically, the contemplation of (theoria), and dare I say, union with, God (theosis). Think about it like this: God speaks to us ... all of us ... sometimes in the silence of our hearts ... sometimes through other people ... sometimes through extraordinary events. But do we actually believe this occurs? Are we prepared for it when God comes? Are we prepared to say, 'do this in me according to your will'? This is clearly the hardest part. The ability to put aside our desires ... our plans ... our frustrations ... our disappointments ... in order to say a total and unreserved yes to God ... that takes lots and lots of prayer ... and spiritual preparation. So, let's pray for each other during this Nativity ... to start working on this 'yes' to God. Pray: "Most Holy Spirit, save me from myself and sanctify me." - A Taste of Death
Raindrops fill the oceans and Water the fields They give birth to glaciers and Feed towering trees. Teardrops fill the heart and Cleanse the mind They give birth to forgiveness and Feed the soul. Both are beauty One is born of pain. Both are truth One demands it. Both are goodness One comes from a taste of death. - Holy Spirit Mondays: A Shock at Christmas
Each week I send a short reflection to help you deepen your relationship with the Holy Spirit. If you have a question or a prayer request, please reach out here . Read: "Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, 'Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus because he will save his people from their sins'" (Mt 1:19-21). Ponder: While you've likely heard or read these words dozens of times, take a few minutes to think ... really think ... about the work of the Holy Spirit here. And not just regarding Mary or Jesus, but Joseph too. Joseph is a faithful, loving, committed man who encounters something with and in Mary that is inexplicable to his human eyes, ears, mind, and heart. And his initial reaction is a very human one ... he considers his options and chooses to leave Mary ... something that just about every person on the planet would have done ... without the intervention of the Holy Spirit. We know the rest of the story of course. But the lesson to all of us who are shortsighted sinners that spend most of our lives in the delusion of self-interest and self-importance is that we are called to reach deeper within to discover the plan of God beyond ourselves. Honestly, this can be a shock to us. So, ask yourself: am I praying? Truly praying? Am I being faithful to what I hear in Word, see in Sacrament, and experience through the interventions of God in my life? In other words, will I choose at Christmas to respond like Joseph? Pray: " Most Holy Spirit, save me from myself and sanctify me." Ask: If you have a question or a prayer request, please reach out here . A Coptic Orthodox icon of Pentecost. - When You Can't See the Road Ahead
"My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end, nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it. Therefore, I will trust you always, though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone." - Waking Up to Hope and Dread
When I wake up in the morning, I experience In equal amounts, Hope and dread. The hope comes from the Expansiveness of the Eternal and the Depths of the Divine, both of which Comfortably make a home in the depths of my soul. The dread comes from the Depraved diabolism and the Maleficent machinations that Perniciously taunt me through the windows of my soul. The former is a pure gift given Despite my sin Separate from my failures and Filled with forgiveness. The latter is an odious attack Against my faith Tearing away at hope Filled with treachery and deceit. Perhaps I am the problem. Have I failed in my vocation? Perhaps I am a target. Have they decided I am a bane to be discarded? I choose love. I choose it in the temporal. I choose it in the eternal. I choose love over everything. - Holy Spirit Mondays: Regret and Renewal
Each week I send a short reflection to help you deepen your relationship with the Holy Spirit. If you have a question or a prayer request, please reach out here . Read : "By the Holy Spirit all creation is renewed and thus returns to its first state" (Matins, Antiphon 2, 7 Dec 25). Ponder : How much do you reflect on the past and present? Do you wish things were different? Does that make you feel regret? How often? Daily? Weekly? Think about it. If you are like most people, you live with a certain kind of hope and seek joy when and where you can. But you also have these negative feelings that pop up, even at times when you don't expect them. Of course, at one level, that's just the ways things can go in life. At another level, that's just what happens when the evil one is nearby. The good news, though, is that you are not alone; not only because everyone else goes through this too, but also because God is looking out for you. You see, The Holy Spirit renews everyone and everything. You may not automatically know or believe this. But truly, it is a gift from God freely given. And you can choose to participate in it. Through prayer, Confession, humility, and a desire for new awareness ... you will find that the Holy Spirit is in and near you ... waiting for you ... offering you renewed mercy, peace, love, and joy ... returning you to your true self ... to the time when you were new in the world ... as a child of God ... living more purely in the Holy Spirit.
